‘The Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) is a regional organization established by indigenous peoples’ organizations in 1992 to strengthen the struggles, cooperation and solidarity among indigenous peoples across Asia. AIPP is committed to the cause of defending and revitalizing indigenous systems; institutions and their control over their ancestral homelands; and their own development and future.

AIPP is guided by its Charter and Working Guidelines agreed upon by its General Assembly. At present, AIPP has members from 14 Countries and has broad network for cooperation and solidarity with other organizations, institutions and advocates at national, regional and global levels.’

Membership to the AIPP is open to all indigenous organizations and movements who subscribe to its aims and objectives. Indigenous organizations wishing to become a member should write a letter to the Secretary General expressing this and to include information about the organization. The AIPP Executive Council will make an interim decision on all applications, but the final endorsement will be made at the General Assembly.

Members and Network Organisations

Currently, membership of AIPP stands at 28 organizations from 14 different countries. The region and status of members are distributed in different parts of the Asia region (see table 1 below). Besides its members, AIPP has regular communications and contacts with about 80 other indigenous organizations and individuals. Some of these organizations have attended several AIPP activities and have been invited to become members. Efforts to get in contact with active indigenous groups Pakistan and Sri Lanka have not been successful. Indigenous organisations are urged to take a more active role and make the work of the Secretariat more relevant to local needs. Involving representatives in the various activities through committees is still facing difficulties.
