‘The Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) is a regional organization established by indigenous peoples’ organizations in 1992 to strengthen the struggles, cooperation and solidarity among indigenous peoples across Asia. AIPP is committed to the cause of defending and revitalizing indigenous systems; institutions and their control over their ancestral homelands; and their own development and future.

AIPP is guided by its Charter and Working Guidelines agreed upon by its General Assembly. At present, AIPP has members from 14 Countries and has broad network for cooperation and solidarity with other organizations, institutions and advocates at national,regional and global levels.’

The Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) is alarmed and expresses its concern and condemnation on the successive attacks to key indigenous leaders and human rights defenders in Bangladesh. Following the attack to Mr. Sanjeeb Drong last 22 January comes the attack of another two prominent indigenous leaders of Bangladesh, Mr. Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma and Raja Devasish Roy, last January 27.

Asia Indigenous Peoples’ Pact (AIPP) expresses its deep concern and condemns the attack on Mr. Sanjeeb Drong, a known human rights defender and the current General Secretary of the Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum (BIPF). BIPF is an active member of AIPP, and Mr. Drong is one of our leaders in Bangladesh.

Calling for A Training Program in Human Rights and Advocacy Print

DTP is calling for applications for Indigenous Peoples, Human Rights and Advocacy: A Training Program in Human Rights and Advocacy for Indigenous Advocates from the Asia-Pacific Region.

The program will be held in partnership with Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact from 22-28 March 2010 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This program will have a focus on the issues surrounding Indigenous people, climate change and the impact of global corporations on Indigenous peoples.

Call For Cases Related To Access To Land And The Right To Food

The Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food office opens a call for cases related to access to land and the right to food. Deadline for submission is 22 January 2010, and this report will be submitted/ addressed to the UN General Assembly in October 2010 by the SR on the Right to Food. Part of this process, two regional consultation meeting will be organized in Asia – one in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the other in Chennai, India. The consultations will invite representatives from 8 cases selected by the Rapporteur and his research team. This consultation will also inform the UNGA report.

It is very much relevant to Indigenous Peoples in terms of land rights and food security.

Training Seminar on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Print

South Asia Sub-regional Training Seminar on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights

A Training Seminar on the Promotion and Implementation of ILO 169 and UNDRIP – Challenges and Opportunities at the National Level was conducted in Dhaka, Bangladesh last October 11-13. This is a follow up activity based on the recommendations of the participants of the Regional Workshop conducted in Nepal last April on the Experiences and lessons learned concerning the Implementation of indigenous peoples’ (IP) rights.
